Community Dining & Food Sustainability Program
Wholesome Meals. One Community. Everyone Welcome.
Pilot Location: Queensland
The Community Dining & Food Sustainability Program is a modern community dining initiative established to provide wholesome, nutritious and affordable meals to all members of the community in welcoming, inclusive and dignified environments.
The program is founded on the belief that access to quality food should never carry stigma. Every person is welcomed equally, receives the same quality meals and enjoys the same dining experience regardless of their personal circumstances.
Community dining locations will operate as vibrant gathering places where people can share meals, build connections and strengthen local communities.
Program Features:
- Fresh home-style meals prepared using quality ingredients.
- Affordable meal options for the wider community.
- Subsidised and free meals for individuals and families experiencing hardship.
- Community dining spaces that encourage social connection and reduce isolation.
- Food rescue partnerships that recover surplus food and reduce waste.
- Seasonal menu planning that maximises the use of available produce and ingredients.
- Mobile meal and outreach services where required.
- Volunteer, training and community participation opportunities.
- Local community involvement in shaping the identity and operation of dining locations.
Community Loyalty Card System
All patrons participate through the same loyalty card system.
The loyalty card system provides a simple, consistent and dignified way for all people to access meals and participate in the program.
Support levels may vary according to individual circumstances; however, every person uses the same system when purchasing or receiving meals.
This approach protects privacy, removes stigma and ensures that no person is publicly identified by their financial circumstances.
No distinction is made between individuals paying standard prices, receiving subsidised meals or accessing free meal support. Everyone is welcomed equally and treated with dignity and respect.
Community Ownership
Each dining location is intended to become a community asset that reflects the people it serves.
The identity, branding and character of individual dining locations will be shaped by local communities, volunteers and supporters, creating a genuine sense of ownership, belonging and pride.
ECHARITY AUSTRALIA provides the framework, resources and support necessary for communities to establish welcoming dining spaces that reflect local needs and aspirations.
Food Rescue and Sustainability
The program actively works to reduce food waste by recovering surplus food and produce from farmers, growers, wholesalers, supermarkets, manufacturers and other suppliers.
Where practical, rescued food is incorporated into meal preparation, food distribution activities and other community support initiatives.
By redirecting quality surplus food away from landfill, the program delivers both social and environmental benefits while helping maximise the value of donated resources.
Sustainable Social Enterprise Model
The program operates as a sustainable social enterprise.
Revenue generated from meals purchased by patrons helps fund subsidised and free meals for individuals and families experiencing hardship.
Any surplus generated through program operations is reinvested into:
- Expanding access to nutritious meals;
- Supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged individuals and families;
- Reducing hunger and food insecurity;
- Establishing additional community dining locations;
- Expanding food rescue operations;
- Supporting other charitable programs and activities undertaken by ECHARITY AUSTRALIA.
Long-Term Vision
ECHARITY AUSTRALIA intends to establish community dining locations throughout Australia, creating a national network of welcoming community spaces where every person can access wholesome food, social connection and support without judgement or stigma.
The long-term goal is to create self-sustaining community dining hubs that strengthen local communities, reduce food insecurity, minimise food waste and provide ongoing support for ECHARITY AUSTRALIA’s broader charitable mission.
Purpose
To relieve hunger, food insecurity and social disadvantage by providing nutritious meals in welcoming community environments that promote dignity, equality, social inclusion, environmental sustainability and community wellbeing.

Food Rescue and Waste Reduction
The supermarket actively works to reduce food waste by recovering quality surplus food and products from farmers, growers, manufacturers, distributors and retailers.
Where appropriate, these products are made available through the supermarket, community dining initiatives and other charitable programs operated by ECHARITY AUSTRALIA.
This approach helps reduce landfill waste while increasing access to affordable food and essential items.

Revenue generated through supermarket operations is used to:

- Expand access to affordable food and essential items;
- Reduce food insecurity and cost-of-living pressures;

ECHARITY AUSTRALIA intends to establish a network of community supermarkets throughout Australia that provide affordable food, essential products and practical support to local communities.
The long-term vision is to create sustainable community-owned retail hubs that help reduce living costs, improve food security, minimise waste and generate ongoing funding for charitable programs and services.
Community Ownership
This supermarket belongs to the Australian people.
The name, identity and branding of the supermarket will be chosen by Australians through community consultation and participation.
Built for the people and supported by the people, the supermarket exists to provide affordable food and essential goods while generating funding for community programs and charitable initiatives across Australia.
Reinvestment of Profits
The Community Supermarket is owned and operated directly by ECHARITY AUSTRALIA.
All profits, income and surplus funds generated through supermarket operations are required to be retained by ECHARITY AUSTRALIA and reinvested into the charitable purposes, objectives and programs of the organisation.
This commitment is embedded within the Constitution of ECHARITY AUSTRALIA and forms a fundamental principle of the organisation’s governance and operation.
No profits, earnings or assets generated by the supermarket are distributed to members, directors, officers or private individuals except as permitted by law and the Constitution.
Every dollar of surplus generated through supermarket operations is directed towards supporting charitable activities, expanding community programs, assisting vulnerable Australians and advancing the mission of ECHARITY AUSTRALIA throughout Australia.
